We know that finding the trails under the leaf cover this time of year can be frustrating. However there are very important reasons leaves should remain on the trail.
One of the best ways we can show appreciation to the land owners who generously allow us on their land is to focus on trail sustainability. Just like grass protects soil in our back yards, the leaves protect soil in the forests from erosion by dissipating energy from falling rain drops. Additionally, the leaves also minimize frost heave once the ground begins to freeze. Watch this video discussing this topic at Fair Hill: https://youtu.be/u5Onv1q7iys.
So do your part to be a trail steward! Grab your riding buddies, pull up TrailForks to help navigate, and ride over the leaves; they will provide better trail conditions for the long run.
